The Movement For Freedom states a new round of repressions started against the election campaign participants, and demands to stop them and to immediately release the detainees.
Vlogger and a presidential candidate initiative group head Siarhey Tsikhanouski and about ten members of his team were detained on May 29 in Hrodna. Repression against election campaign participants continued on May 30 and 31. According to human rights activists, more than 20 people were detained, including politician Mikalay Statkevich, and there is no communication with MFF member Aliaksandr Ilyinets.
The MFF states that the election campaign is taking place in Belarus in an atmosphere of repression and persecution of political opponents of the current regime.
We believe that a provocation was committed against Siarhey Tsikhanouski and members of his team.
We believe that the regime is unfolding a new round of repressions against the election campaign participants.
In view of the above, the Movement For Freedom demands:
to immediately release all detained politicians and activists,
to stop the provocations and using them to persecute political opponents,
to conduct a transparent and open trial of Tsikhanouski’s case, and to punish those responsible for the provocation,
to put an end to the practice of arbitrary detention of election campaign participants.
We call on Belarusians to show solidarity with the detainees, and the international community to support Belarusian politicians and public activists.
