Hubarevich: Freedom Day celebration in Minsk was successful

Organizers of the Belarusian People’s Republic’s 101st anniversary celebration summed up the results at a press conference in Minsk.

“We believe that the event in the Kiyeuski Square was successful. It was OK, bearing in mind the difficult circumstances of the preparation and execution,” said Chairman of the Movement For Freedom (MFF) Yuri Hubarevich at the press conference.

The politician reminded that Minsk City Administration has consistently banned holding the celebration at all central sites. “The decision on applying for the Kiyeuski Square had to be taken virtually at the last moment, because we hoped to the last that some other site might be allowed. And when we saw that Minsk risks remaining without any legal place to celebrate the 101st anniversary of the BPR’s independence, we decided that we had to apply at least for the Kiyeuski Square,” said the MFF Chairman.

“I think that we made a correct decision. According to the feedback by the participants of the yesterday’s event, they liked the organization, the opportunity to listen to the performances by Belarusian musicians, the food court, and the event applicants’ tents. Considering the short time we had for preparation, everything went very well,” said Hubarevich.

We had certain restrictions with regard to money, said the MFF Chairman. As was previously reported, “not a single rouble of the previously collected money for the whole range of #БНР101 activities was transferred to the Minsk event organizers. We had to collect money from scratch through our bank accounts. We accepted donations both in Belarus and abroad, as well as through our web platform. We have collected about Br6,000 [some €2,500]. This is not enough to cover all the expenses,” said the politician.

In particular, he recalled that the police work contract costs are about Br3,800 [some €1,600], but the police intend to increase this amount because they think that the declared number of participants was exceeded as early as in middle of the event (at least 1,500 people were present). “Therefore, they will charge additional payment. The total amount could reach 250 basic amounts [some €2,700],” said Hubarevich.

The politician thanked everyone for their donations and called for further contributions. Money will be collected for another 10 days, until April 4.

Hubarevich called the detentions during the celebration a provocation aimed at disrupting the event and creating a nervous atmosphere. The politician noted that Zmitser Dashkevich and Vital Rimasheuski were detained on the playground in front to their families and other children.

“We consider this a provocation and an attempt to disrupt the yesterday’s event. This will also have an impact on the assessment of the event by international organizations. As a result, the attempt of the Belarusian authorities to portray a democratic face was futile,” concluded the politician.

Freedom Day Minsk celebration organizers undertook to organize the celebration of the 102nd anniversary of the BPR’s independence and called for creating a large steering committee. This was announced at the press conference by Co-Chairman of the Belarusian Christian Democracy (BCD) party Vital Rimasheuski and by Volha Kavalkova. They intend to obtain permission to hold the 2020 celebration in Kastrichnitskaya Square in the centre of Minsk.
