The organising committee’s meeting on February 19 was attended by the representatives of the Belarusian Popular Front (BPF) Party, the Movement For Freedom (MFF), the Belarusian Christian Democracy Party (BCHD), the United Civil Party (UCP), the European Belarus, Pahonia (“Pursuit”) artistic association, Zmena (“Change”) youth organisation, and Razam (Together) solidarity movement.
The meeting’s participants have discussed the artistic arrangement and information support of the holiday. It is planned to make a large banner for a street action and to issue 10 thousand stickers. Mikola Kupava has been put in charge of the artistic part.
Liberty Day groups will be created in Facebook and vkontakte.ru in the near future.
It was proposed to the leaders of organisations forming the organising committee to write publicist articles explaining why Belarusians should definitely celebrate the day of March 25.
Viktar Ivashkievich undertook to hold negotiations with independent newspapers’ editorial offices in order to hold three round-table conferences there, with the keywords being “INDEPENDENT”, “PEOPLE’S”, and “REPUBLIC”.
At the meeting, the representatives of the MFF, the BPF, the BCHD, and the UCP signed the application on holding a street action on Liberty Day. The application will be filed to the Minsk City Executive Committee at 11 a.m. tomorrow. It is planned to hold the festive action on March 24. The gathering is scheduled at 12 a.m. at the entry to the Botanical Garden. The announced route of demonstration is: Niezalezhnastsi Ave. – Surhanava St – Banhalor square. The meeting will begin in the Friendship of Nations park at 2 p.m. Major slogans of the Liberty Day-2013 will be: “Defend the Independence!” and “Freedom to Political Prisoners!”.
A festive meeting has been scheduled on March 24 with the participation of historians, politicians, public figures, as well as a festive concert. By the request of the organising committee, the MFF chairman has sent a corresponding letter of guarantee to the MTZ Community Hall. It is planned to rent the hall from 5 p.m. till 9 p.m.
The organising committee members will lay flowers to the monuments of Yakub Kolas and Yanka Kupala in the morning on March 25.
Uladzimir Padhol, invited to the meeting as a guest, proposed attempting to apply for holding the closing round-table conference dedicated to the 95th anniversary of the BPR at the premises of the Museum of Belarusian Statehood located in the president’s administration. Representatives of both the independent society and official authorities can be invited there. The closing round-table conference will be held in the evening on March 25.
Despite all this creativity and an unexpectedly large number of organisational proposals, the organising committee members hope for a tolerant attitude towards themselves on the part of the authorities.
“It’s evident that the authorities have demonstrated their willingness to re-establish relations with the West over the last several months, and they will try to sell the absence of apparent obstacles for the celebration of Liberty Day as substantial steps on the path of democratisation. The democratic forces should use this opportunity to the maximum. For this reason, we hope to obtain permission for holding a series of scheduled events dedicated to March 25,” says Yuras Hubarevich.
When asked what is the reason why such large number of events should be held on these festive days in a pro forma independent state, the MFF deputy chairman responded:
“There is no guarantor of independence in Belarus – the power has been usurped by a group of individuals who use it in their personal interests, while the people, for the most part, are occupied with surviving or improving their welfare. In this situation, the nationally responsible democratic forces should demonstrate their unity as for the issue of preserving the independence.”
The next meeting of the organising committee on celebration of Liberty Day-2013 will take place at 11 a.m. on February 22.
The organising committee’s press conference has been scheduled for 12 a.m. on February 25.
