Movement for Freedom
The idea of creating the Movement for Freedom was born during the waves of public protests against the rigging of the 2006 presidential election results. Since then Movement unites supporters of national renaissance, democratic and European way of development for Belarus. In December 2008, from the 4th attempt the Movement for Freedom was registered by the Ministry of Justice as a human rights and education public organisation. From the moment of its creation, the Movement is headed by Dr. Aliaksandr Milinkevich, a single candidate of democratic forces for the 2006 presidential election, laureate of European Parliament Sakhrov Prize “For Freedom of Thought” (2006).
During presidential elections 2010 campaign Movement for Freedom organised own observation campaign, some members of the Movement worked for presidential candidates, who joined coalition “Belarusian Choice”. After elections Movement for Freedom focused on providing assistance to repressed for political reasons, and also on uniting society and democratic forces.
According to the Statute, the aim of the Movement for Freedom is defence of human rights and freedoms, fixed in the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus and international documents on human rights, and education activities in this area.
Goals of the Movement for Freedom:
- Facilitate civil society and constitutional state building, strengthening principles of freedom, democracy, and human rights;
- Facilitate securing of the country’s independence and sovereignty, increasing its international authority;
- Facilitate creation of conditions for holding of general, free, and fair presidential and parliamentary elections in accordance with international standards.
Moreover, gradual integration of Belarus with the European Union is one of priorities of the Movement for Freedom.
